Our Trip North—Eastern Shore, New York, Montreal, and Vermont—May – July 2007

Our Trip North—Eastern Shore, New York, Montreal, and Vermont—May – July 2007
As temperatures began to rise, we headed north again and went up the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay before staying with Becky in Delaware, Corinne in Annapolis, and Dana in Germantown, Maryland. From those locations we visited Bill’s children and grandchildren and other friends and family. Here are some pictures of the Shore.

We left in mid-June heading north first to the Corning, New York, area, visiting the glass museum, the wineries around Keuka Lake, Mark Twain’s study in Elmira, and Watkins Glenn. Next we headed east across the middle of the state to Glimmerglass Lake, near Cooperstown, New York (Yes—east before heading west), then north to the Adirondacks and including a visit to Ft. Ticonderoga, which was having a reenactment of the key battle of the French and Indian War the day we were there.

Next we headed to Montreal and Sherbrook in Quebec Province. I said “je ne parle pas francais” many times and became adept at hand motions. Bill’s great-grandfather was born north of Sherbrook and worked the railroads from there (Brompton, Quebec) to Newport, Vermont (we were two hours at the border)—and farther south to St. Johnsbury, VT. So we wandered around the mountains following his trail and the railroad line in Vermont’s Northeastern Kingdom.

From there, we finally started west—crossing New York again going west along the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Thousand Islands scenic drive to Niagara Falls, New York and Ontario, Canada.

After a brief stop, we headed straight west across Ontario to Port Huron, Michigan (another two-hour wait at the border). So, now as we left the East behind us, we had the sense that we really were moving west.
